Electrical Power System

Electrical Power System main PCB.

Purpose

The Electrical Power System supplies the satellite payload and the supporting subsystems. The primary functions of the EPS are:

  • Power source
  • Power storage
  • Power conditioning
  • Power distribution
  • Power protection

In orbit the satellite solar arrays generates power from solar irradiation. Energy is stored in batteries delivering continuous power during eclipses, or peak demands. The power system conditions power for the electrical systems on the power bus. The power distribution is protected as loads are switched. A power management function controls and monitors the power system and loads, handles commands and telemetry, and is responsible for initializing the satellite when deployed in orbit. Autonomy maintains safe operation and ensures recovery from error events and failures.
